I just like to add a few words about the last Soup Kitchen which Tom has so eloquently written about below. I shared the same fears as Tom that we wouldn't get many along. It's nice to be wrong, sometimes. The new Soup Kitchen turntable made it's debut. I, however, only spun one vinyl record - that being 'Since Yesterday' by Strawberry Switchblade. And the turntable suffered on the way home in the cab, and I am now trying to source a new tonearm weight as it fell off and I couldn't find it in the cab. I really need to get a flight case for the decks.
Musically I got to play the early set - which was fine by me and as such it was a fun experience playing a bunch of Scottish stuff to random Australians. They seemed to like it. One Japanese guy came over and proclaimed his love for early Primal Scream after I played 'All Fall Down'. That made me smile.
Where we go next with The Soup Kitchen is any ones guess but I have a feeling you'll be seeing us behind the decks again, somewhere and sometime in 2008.

Soup Kitchen #3 Sound of Indie-pendent Scotland

I must admit to being a bit nervous about the latest night. Our guest dj Jamie Holman had to cancel a few days before the night itself and we were unable to find a replacement. Holman's prescence would have pulled in a few as he is a popular guy judging how many of his mates came to see him at the George Tavern for Lost Music Presents the other week.
The other worry was that a lot of people from the London indie pop scene had travelled to Stoke that day for the Parralleograms gig at the Glebe in Stoke and we thought that would also affect the turn out. We needn't had worried as there was a pretty respectable attendance in the end being a mix of people who had heard about the night and had come along and those who were already in the venue celebrating one thing or another, choosing to stay. They must had enjoyed the music.
The theme was Scottish indie and although at times we strayed from what most people would consider "indie" 90% of music played was Scottish through and through. There were some great songs played and our other guest DJ Chimes had me chuckling opening his set with Ivor Cutler.
Songs by The Skids, Fire Engines, Orange Juice, Josef K, Franz Ferdinand, Bronksi Beat, Simple Minds, Belle & Sebastian, Hermit Crabs, Altered Images, Aberfeldy, BMX Bandits, Soup Dragons, Jesus & Mary Chain, Primal Scream, BA Robertson, The Skids, The Delgados and many more were played.
My personal highlight was the person who came up just after I starting playing You've Got The Power by Win. His enthusiasm for the song knew no bounds and I was glad to have made his night. The JD Twitch & The Truffle Club's Optimo Mix of Dance Me In by Sons and Daughters also sounded pretty great on the new Soup Kitchen turntable!
The crowd starting thinning around midnight and we were preparing to pack up when a new influx of people came down meaning we were happy to keep spinning until the 1am close.
I thought the venue was pretty decent but having the only toilets in the place in the room we hired meant there was a lot of movement about (no pun intended!). They could do with a larger range of beers downstairs so that people don't venture to the upstairs bar but they seemed to be pleased with us, asking us to come back. We are thinking of making changes to the way we run the night including adding bands under the Soup Kitchen banner which would rule that out. But for a band free night I guess we would come back.
Tune Of The Night: Torn by My Bloody Valentine. Not Scottish but it got people dancing.
People Of The night: The three people sitting near the DJ decks who drank and sang their way through pretty much most of the night.
Thanks To Chimes for dj'ing.

BRICOLAGE
Glasgow's Bricolage are Chris (vocals, guitar), Graham (vocals, guitar), Darren (vocals, bass) and Colin (drums). Clearly influenced by their Glaswegian antecedents on the Postcard label, namely Orange Juice and Josef K, they released their first single "Footsteps" on semi-legendary Scottish label Creeping Bent, in June 2006, and a second single "Looting Takes The Wanting Out of Waiting" on Fantastic Plastic in February this year. Now signed to Memphis Industries, Bricolage are currently recording their debut album.

THE WAVE PICTURES
For a few years The Wave Pictures have played sporadically in the UK, France and New York, sharing shows with Herman Dune and The Jeffrey Lewis Band, as well as singing The Wave Pictures song "Dust Off Your Heart" with Herman Dune on a radio session for the great John Peel. The Wave Pictures have also served as backing band for both John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats and Darren Hayman, Hayman’s old band Hefner being a clear influence, along with the guitar playing of Tom Verlaine. Now, with the release of their brilliant new single on Moshi Moshi they’re about to become stars in their own right.
“Only occasionally does music intoxicate like this: once every decade (he says, at random) – counting backwards, early Pavement, Galaxie 500, The Pastels… I’m sure you can make up your own reference points” (Everett True, Plan B)

WAKE THE PRESIDENT
Fronted by Scottish/Swedish twins Erik and Bjorn, Glasgow’s Wake The President are shortly to release their second single on Electric Honey records, the label started by Alan Rankine of The Associates and responsible for the release of Belle and Sebastian’s first album “Tigermilk”.
“Wake The President caused quite a stir at Indietracks with a drunken, loud-mouthed, fearless and utterly magnificent set that was like watching a young Edwyn Collins, cloned, high on his own runaway talent. Set the words of Arab Strap to the music of Orange Juice and you're close to the brilliance of these newcomers.” (How Does It Feel To Be Loved)

FALLING AND LAUGHING
A new band out of Birmingham led by Dunc Vernon, the man behind Birmingham’s indiepop night The Autumn Store. They describe themselves as Sonic Youth on Sarah Records crossed with Jens Lekman fronting The Wedding Present or The Field Mice being slightly miffed about something but acting fine about it.
