The Bodines - Decide

The Bodines were formed in Glossop, Manchester in 1985 comprising of Mick Ryan (vocals, guitar), Paul Brotherton (guitar), Tim Burwood (bass) and Paul Lilley (drums).

After debut single on Creation "God Bless" Lilley was replaced by John Rowland. Their next single was their most well known track "Therese" which featured on the NME C86 tape. After one final single for Creation, "Heard It All", they signed to the major label Magnet Records. They produced three singles for Magnet including a remixed Therese but all failed to chart as did their only album "Played" which made #97 in the UK album charts during the summer of 1987. "Played" was produced by Ian Broudie who later had his own success as The Lightning Seeds.

The lack of commercial success saw the band being dropped by Magnet and John Rowland left to play for The Rainkings.

The band re-emerged in 1989 with Burwood and Rowland being replaced by Ian Watson and Spencer Birtwistle (also played in Laugh, Intastella and the Fall) and released one single for Manchester's Playhard Records, They also contributed a track for a Playhard compilation before splitting for a final time.

In 2007 Firestation Records released an EP comprising three unreleased tracks recorded in 1988 titled Shrinkwrap.

Decide was the bands final single on Playhard and was released in 1989.

Beef

Apart from this discography there doesn't seem to be any information on the English band Beef on the net at all.

I picked up the Lazen Hags single and the Living In A Hee Hee Hay album at the time (1989) then came across the Low Slung Town compilation in a charity shop some years later. Who ever had donated the album removed a little treasure chest from their collection!

The band sound could and should be described as punkish power pop. Judge for yourselves.

Fucked Up Covering The Shoppies

Fucked Up are a Canadian hardcore band who I know next to nothing about as it's not my sort of music. However last year the band produced two limited 7" singles of 500 covering tracks by The Shop Assistants and Dolly Mixture. It was only sold at the Hidden World Three-Day Rock and Roll Gathering - wherever that was. I got my copy at a slightly inflated price care of e-bay.

There are two versions of I Don't Wanna Be Friends With You. One has male vocals (Pinkeye) whilst the other features female ones (Manno). I have also posted the original version for comparison. I prefer the Manno vocal cover version.

Fucked Up - I Don't Wanna Be Friends With You (Manno Vocal)
Fucked Up - I Don't Wanna Be Friends With You (Pinkeye Vocal)
Shop Assistants - I Don't Wanna Be Friends With You

If there is much demand (post in comments) I will post the covers of Looking Back and maybe the Dolly Mixture covers at some point in the future.

About

Are You Scared To Get Happy takes it's name from the Bristol fanzine of the same name that was produced by Matt Haynes who later co-founded Sarah Records.

This little blog is just my tribute to the indie pop scene of years past and I hope you enjoy it. This blog is created in the spirit of my original indie-mp3 site which existed between 2002 - 2005 and is now a fully fledged music review site.

I endeavour to update it on a weekly basis with tracks posted by me being available for a limited period. Feel free to leave comments or contact me. If posting a track offends get in touch and I will take it down.
