The Heartthrobs

The Heartthrobs were a group hailing from Reading, England. They formed in 1987 and split in 1993. The band included Rose and Rachel Carlotti who were the half sisters of the late Echo and The Bunnymen drummer Peter De Freitas.

The band released their debut single Toy on In-Tape in 1987. This was followed by two singles for Rough Trade and two more on their own Profumo label. They then signed for One Little Indian where they remained for the duration of their existence releasing seven singles and three albums.

I first saw the band when they supported the Jesus and Mary Chain in 1987 and I was so impressed that I remember rushing out to buy the Toy single the following day. I saw them a few times mainly at the beginning of their career. 1990's Cleopatra Grip album remains one of my all time favourites and single such as Here I Hide, I Wonder Why and Dreamtime still stand the test of time today.

You can read more about the band at Yinpop's Heart Throbs pages or via their Wikipedia entry.

The tracks here are all from the 12" version of Toy.

Tom, could it be that music starts playing as soon as one opens this post? (And perhaps on other posts as well - I usually browser the net with sound turned off.) That, erm, it pretty bad in a MySpace-kind of way... And your site is way to good for that, I would think...

Just looking through my old vinyl collection and found 'Cleopatra Grip', can't remember much about it and don't own a turntable anymore. Also found albums by The Parachute Men, The Katydids, Danielle Dax, The Sundays. Think I had a thing for indie bands with female vocals at the time. Wonder what they're all doing now....

About

Are You Scared To Get Happy takes it's name from the Bristol fanzine of the same name that was produced by Matt Haynes who later co-founded Sarah Records.

This little blog is just my tribute to the indie pop scene of years past and I hope you enjoy it. This blog is created in the spirit of my original indie-mp3 site which existed between 2002 - 2005 and is now a fully fledged music review site.

I endeavour to update it on a weekly basis with tracks posted by me being available for a limited period. Feel free to leave comments or contact me. If posting a track offends get in touch and I will take it down.
