Beef

Apart from this discography there doesn't seem to be any information on the English band Beef on the net at all.

I picked up the Lazen Hags single and the Living In A Hee Hee Hay album at the time (1989) then came across the Low Slung Town compilation in a charity shop some years later. Who ever had donated the album removed a little treasure chest from their collection!

The band sound could and should be described as punkish power pop. Judge for yourselves.

Beef - Low Slung Town
Beef - Lazen Hags
Beef - Stop The Pigeon

If anyone has any information on the band please contact us.

I remember seeing the Lazen hags video on MTV's 120 Minutes back in 1990 or so. Still have a copy on a cassette somewhere. Very punky looking, If I remember

I was a big fan of Beef. Still listen to them now and then. I saw them play in Ipswich, Suffolk several times in the late '80s and early '90s, and got quite chatty with them. They were a punky, poppy, indie, grebo, gothy kind of band, but with melodies and hooks and the occasional slow and moody one.

The lead singer Jane Stokes has an interesting, unique and often haunting voice - it's sometimes sweet and treacley, sometimes deep and mysterious and sometimes shouty shrieking. She looked like a short and feisty Tank Girl - she was actually a fan of that comic (as am I!).

She was a great performer, and the rest of the band were pretty competent and fun to watch.

Here's what I've got of theirs:

Stop The Pigeon - 12" EP (signed by all the band!)
Head Exploding Experience - 12" EP
    Lazen Hags - 7" single
Living in a hee hee hey - 12" LP

I've also got the 'Low Slung Town' compilation CD, which was a great 50p find in a charity shop a few years back!

My fave songs by them are 'Stop The Pigeon', 'Pull Your Foot Out' and 'Low Slung Town', though their cover of 'Miracles (You Sexy Thing)' is great fun!

Just had to put the CD on now... listening to them again the songs all sound pretty similar and not particularly inspiring or innovative, but still great to listen to - brings back good memories and feelings. Her voice still gets to me a bit :)

I've been looking for information on Beef for a while now. I used to live with Jane and John in Islington in the mid-80s. Would be great if anyone could give me some links or contact info.
